Gordon McCall: A Driving Force Behind Monterey Motorsport Park’s Success

1024 512 Monterey Motorsport Park

Lifelong local resident, Gordon McCall, is not only widely recognized for all he does on the Monterey Peninsula, but he has also earned a well-deserved reputation as one of the most sought-after experts on collector cars and motorcycles in the world.

Founder and co-host with his wife, Molly, of McCall’s Motorworks Revival, which annually kicks Car Week into high gear at the Monterey Jet Center — McCall has also served as a specialist for the Christie’s International global auction house and a class judge and field coordinator for more than 25 years at the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

His latest venture is hosting a new television series, “Road to Provenance,” which has McCall traveling around the globe to highlight noteworthy vehicles, private collections or international automotive events of interest to enthusiasts.

You can read all about McCall and his many ventures — including his role as part of the development team behind Monterey Motorsport Park in the Summer/Fall 2019 edition of Carmel Magazine, currently on newsstands and in bookstores and retail outlets throughout the area.

In fact, Gordon is more than just a driving force behind this unique car community — he’ll be moving his business, McCall Events, and his collection of cars and motorcycles, and Molly will relocate her gallery of paintings and photographs to Monterey Motorsport Park once it opens scheduled for this fall.

Building a True Community at Monterey Motorsport Park and Giving Back

837 500 Monterey Motorsport Park

From Day One, we’ve shared how Monterey Motorsport Park will be more than a collection of dusty storage units like a typical mini-storage facility. Rather, it will be a collection of exclusive garage-condos, customized by dedicated car enthusiasts and owners who are part of a vibrant car community.

As part of building that community spirit, Monterey Motorsport Park has become actively involved in a number of local charities — even before the community opens later this fall.

Raising Funds for Northern California Special Olympics

One of those activities is Police in Pursuit (PIP) — a car-driven fundraiser in which local law enforcement officers race their “souped-up” retired patrol vehicles at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville. The 15-lap competition around the 1/4-mile dirt oval is loads of fun and comes with bragging rights and a trophy. But most importantly, it raises funds so that special athletes from throughout Northern California can follow their dreams in athletic pursuits.

Monterey Motorsport Park recently made a donation to Special Olympics that brought with it title sponsorship of a car driven by Detective Dan Anderson with the San Jose Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit. Although relatively new to track-driving, Detective Dan pulled off a stunning come-from-behind victory in the June PIP feature race at Ocean Speedway. More details are in the photo caption below.

Detective Dan Anderson of the San Jose Police Department Special Investigations Unit won his first career Police in Pursuit main event with a last ditch effort to top AJ Waltrip of the Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Office. Roy Iler of the San Benito Sheriff’s Office showed the way and looked poised to take the victory as he extended his lead. On lap 12, Iler’s car suddenly slowed with a flat tire down the backstretch allowing AJ Waltrip by for the lead. Waltrip and Anderson had been around each other for much of the race and with Iler’s misfortune, the battle for second quickly turned into a fight for the win. Anderson was held up behind Iler’s stricken car for a moment, but as the white flag flew, Anderson closed back in on Waltrip. In the final corner, Waltrip blocked low, while Anderson drove around the outside and powered by Waltrip to grab the win at the line. The margin of victory was just over two-tenths of a second. John Hohmann of the Scotts Valley PD charged from last to take the third step on the podium. Dan Anderson was also the heat race victor.

Contributing to Other Worthy Causes

Monterey Motorsport Park has also gotten involved in raising funds for other extraordinarily worthwhile organizations, such as Bridge Culinary, which caters local events while providing money to help fund vital programs for the Bridge Restoration Ministry of Pacific Grove. In addition, a Car Week invitation-only fundraiser will benefit SNIP — the Spay Neuter Imperative Project — which offers below-cost, mobile spay and neuter services to pet owners in Monterey and San Benito Counties.

“We’re committed to being part of the fabric of the community,” said Ralph Borelli, co-founder and a member of the development team. “With long-time area residents such as Gordon McCall of McCall Events — who will be locating his business and bringing his personal collections here — and many other local owners, we’re pleased to feel so accepted on the Monterey Peninsula.”

Buildings Are Rising Quickly

Construction is continuing at a rapid pace in the summer months at Monterey Motorsport Park. When it opens in Q4, the community will feature:

  • Spacious mezzanines above the garage floor in each unit, for owners who want to create a personal office, leisure or recreational space — or just for extra storage
  • Oversized roll-up doors for easily moving vehicles into and out of your garage-condo
  • A separate walk-in door for you and your guests
  • Soaring ceilings in each unit to as much as 25 feet
  • Access-controlled entry to the community, with video surveillance and proactive remote guarding services
  • High-speed fiber optic Internet and cable TV options for each unit

More Ways to Become Part of the Monterey Motorsport Park Community

By now, you’re well aware of Monterey Motorsport Park. Construction is moving quickly and the building exteriors are rapidly approaching completion. In a word, the excitement is building.

Perhaps you’re excited as well — but for a variety of reasons, the timing isn’t right for you to purchase one of the upscale garage-condos in the four-building complex along Highway 68 adjacent to the Monterey airport.

Now, you have several exciting new opportunities to join our unique car community!

Lease a Luxury Garage-Condo

Due to strong investor interest, a very limited number of garage-condos will be available to lease. Currently, it’s expected that one-year leases will be available for $1.95 gross* per sq. ft. Longer leases of up to five years will also be available — with attractive reductions in rent for each year added to your lease term.**

* The gross rent includes property owners’ association fees, but not property taxes or power and light expenses for individual units.

** Each additional year added to a lease commitment — up to five years total — will receive a $.05 per sq. ft. base rent deduction. (For example: a 5-year lease will be $1.75 gross per sq. ft.) In addition, there will be a 3% annual cost-of-living adjustment.

Lease With Option to Buy

If you’re leaning toward buying into this extraordinary community, but simply can’t swing it at the moment, you can arrange for a lease with an option to buy. Lease for 18 months and we’ll give you a purchase option, with 10% of your rent applying toward the price when you close escrow. Contact us for additional terms that apply to this outstanding option.

Ideal Solution for Collectors, Motorsports Enthusiasts and Small Businesses

Quite simply, Monterey Motorsport Park is the only facility of its kind under construction on the Monterey Peninsula. Purpose-built for auto enthusiasts and small businesses that cater to people who love cars, the complex is scheduled to open before the end of the year.

Interest in the garage-condos is exceptionally high and ramping up even more as Monterey Car Week approaches. Selection is dwindling fast. Attractive community amenities include:

  • Completely enclosed complex — with access-controlled entry, video surveillance and proactive remote guarding service to safeguard cars and other valuables
  • Oversized roll-up doors for easily moving vehicles into and out of your garage-condo
  • A separate walk-in door for you and your guests
  • Soaring ceilings to as much as 25 feet
  • A mezzanine in each unit 13 feet above the garage floor — accessible via an interior staircase — which can be customized into a luxurious retreat or a personal office
  • High-speed fiber optic Internet and cable TV access

Small Businesses at Monterey Motorsport Park Have TMC Financing on their Team for Attractive SBA Loans

1000 528 Monterey Motorsport Park

Monterey Motorsport Park — a unique car community featuring the next evolution in luxury garage-condos — is drawing a mix of individuals who need a place to store their car collections and memorabilia, as well asa select group of small businesses. These business owners include:

  • Gordon McCall of McCall Events — Organizes and hosts the elegant McCall’s Motorworks Revival event at the Jet Center that kicks off Monterey Car Week, as well as many other hot-ticket gatherings on the Monterey Peninsula. Gordon will store his collection of cars and motorcycles in his unit as well, and his painter/photographer wife, Molly, will use space for an art gallery.
  • Next-generation auto sales businesses — Individuals who apply for either wholesale or retail dealer licenses from the DMV and handle most of their transactions online.
  • High-end auto shops and other automotive related businesses
  • Non-automotive-related businesses — Personal service businesses where the user just needs an office

Variety of SBA Financing Available from TMC Financing

With Monterey Motorsport Park now working with TMC Financing — a premier SBA lender that’s provided more than $9 billion in loans for over 5,000 businesses in California and Nevada, making them the top lender in both states — small businesses in need of financing to purchase their garage-condo now have a ready resource available.

TMC Financing provides two types of SBA loans:

  • SBA 504 loans — Specifically designed to help businesses buy commercial real estate and other fixed assets at below-market, long-term, fixed interest rates. Rates have recently been at around 4%.
  • SBA 7A loans — Financing with 25-year amortization that can be fixed or variable for five years, with resets every 5 years. Depending upon the lender, rates have ranged recently from 5.5% to 7%.

SBA 504 loans are ideal for purchasing a unit at Monterey Motorsport Park because small business owners can put as little as 10% down (some start-ups and single-purpose facilities may require a slightly higher down payment) and keep the rest of their capital working for them in their business. The below-market rates are fixed and fully amortized over 25 years, so there’s no balloon.

There’s also no maximum amount with SBA 504 financing — unlike with an SBA 7A loan — and borrowers can hold multiple SBA loans at the same time, up to the SBA’s aggregate lending cap of $5 million.

Prequalifying Speeds Purchase Process

TMC Financing can prequalify luxury garage-condo buyers at Monterey Motorsport Park by reviewing three years of business and personal tax returns, interim business financial statements that are less than 90 days old, a schedule of any business debt, and a personal financial statement.

Because TMC partners with a bank on every SBA 504 transaction, the firm has solid relationships and understands the banking landscape. This can help TMC source the best lender to maximize your chances for quick approval.

One-of-a-Kind Opportunity

Located adjacent to the airport along Highway 68, Monterey Motorsport Park is truly a one-of-a-kind opportunity for individuals and business owners who are collectors or motorsports enthusiasts. The facility offers high-end, secure units — with roomy garage spaces and unique mezzanines 13 feet above the garage floor that can be customized into leisure retreats or offices to manage a business or handle personal affairs. Amenities include:

  • Completely fenced facility — with access-controlled entry, video surveillance and pro-active remote guarding services
  • Oversized roll-up doors for easily moving vehicles into and out of your garage-condo
  • A separate walk-in door for owners and guests
  • Soaring ceilings in each unit to as much as 25 feet

Monterey Motorsport Park Car Week Event to Raise Money for Vital Cause

Join Monterey Motorsport Park (MMP) on Tuesday, August 13th of Car Week to Raise Money for the Spay Neuter Imperative Project (SNIP)

Monterey Car Week is coming — from August 9th to August 18th — and on Tuesday, August 13th you can help with this exceptionally worthwhile cause by coming to MMP’s Open House and benefit for SNIP. Guests can enjoy food and drinks catered by Bridge Culinary while getting a chance to see the amazing progress of MMP. Sponsored in part by Hagerty, McCall Events, Monterey Motorsport Park, and New Front Insurance.

If you’re an animal lover and you’ve ever visited your local pound, you understand. It simply breaks your heart. So many good-natured, well-behaved dogs and cats that simply want a home and a family to love. But not enough families to adopt or rescue them all.

And so their fate is sealed, with approximately 2.7 million animals euthanized every year.

Meet Melanie Scherer

Changed forever by the untimely loss of her yellow Labrador retriever, Luke, to cancer, Melanie Scherer has taken the lead in trying to find workable solutions to this problem.

First, she started Luke’s Legacy Foundation, which works with a variety of pet rescue organizations — many of them overloaded and badly overworked — to provide desperately needed funding for spay and neuter services and vaccinations, and to sponsor adoption days.

On the Road with the SNIP Bus

But working with these pet rescue organizations and seeing so many animals still not adopted, convinced Melanie that there must be a better way. And so, SNIP — the Spay Neuter Imperative Project — was born.

Melanie started SNIP and invested in the first SNIP bus to serve the Coachella Valley in 2016 to provide below-cost, mobile spay and neuter services, and more.

“Unfortunately, we can’t rescue our way out of the pet overpopulation problem. There are just too many animals to find homes for them all. That’s when I realized that a mobile spay and neuter service was the answer.”

Melanie Scherer

Making an Impact in Monterey

SNIP provides services to communities in three regions: Riverside County in Southern California, the Central Valley, and right here in Monterey and San Benito counties. They reach out to all types of people in every community: from Monterey and Carmel to Castroville, East Salinas and Soledad. No ID or personal information is ever required.

SNIP buses have traveled to homeless encampments under bridges and to the poorest as well as wealthier neighborhoods. And everywhere SNIP goes, they offer the same services:

  • $25 spay or neutering for dogs and cats under 40 pounds
  • $75 spay or neutering for dogs 40 pounds and over
  • $11–$25 vaccinations for diseases such as rabies, parvo, feline leukemia, and more
  • $15 microchipping

“Dogs and cats that have been spayed or neutered and have their shots are much more likely to be adopted. So we can manage the overpopulation issue while giving these pets a better chance to find a loving home.”

Melanie Scherer

In Monterey County and surrounding areas, SNIP medical teams have spayed or neutered nearly 2,300 pets in just nine months. In total, the SNIP California program has provided spay or neuter services for 10,600 pets in only three years.

This effort is truly a labor of love for Melanie. Some days, her phone rings 100 times or more with people wanting to learn more about SNIP or to arrange for the bus to visit their community.

“We make the money we raise — through fundraisers such as the upcoming open house at Monterey Motorsport Park or donations solicited through our website — go as far as possible. We pay our highly trained medical teams, of course. But SNIP’s board, our many volunteers and I receive zero compensation. It’s all about the pets.”

Melanie Scherer

Garage Unlimited of Monterey Holds 2nd Annual Spring Meet-and-Greet

1024 426 Monterey Motorsport Park

Owners at Monterey Motorsport Park predecessor come together for fun and to raise money for a good cause.

Anyone who’s been considering the purchase of a luxury garage-condo at Monterey Motorsport Park, but wondered whether these garage-condo complexes truly become vibrant, vital communities of car enthusiasts need only look to predecessor, Garage Unlimited of Monterey, — developed by the same team that’s currently working on Monterey Motorsport Park.

The date was Saturday, April 27th. A beautiful, sunny spring afternoon on the Monterey Peninsula. And more than 150 people gathered for that car community’s 2nd Annual Meet-and-Greet — a day filled with friends (old and new), fun, food, and fantastic cars.

Back to the Future

While many people have been fascinated by the concept of time travel, this delightful afternoon at Garage Unlimited proved that traveling through time might well be possible.

First, a wide variety of fully restored automobiles from decades past were on display as if they had just come off the assembly line. This included a 1953 Chevy Bel Air Convertible, 1958 Scarab Roadster, 1964 Cobra Daytona Coupe, and many more classic cars, muscle cars and exotics. Garage Unlimited owners had their units open to the invited guests, revealing even more time-honored cars and motorcycles.

Second, the get-together was like a flash forward for owners of Monterey Motorsport Park — scheduled to open in the last quarter of this year — of future events likely to be held within the peninsula’s latest upscale garage-condo car community.

Benefiting The Bridge Restoration Ministry

Sumptuous food and beverages were served by Bridge Culinary, part of The Bridge Restoration Ministry, which received proceeds from the event.

The Bridge provides 12-month, Christian-based, residential recovery programs for men and women who have been dealing with substance abuse issues. Bridge Culinary, led by a veteran chef who is also a former member of The Bridge Recovery Program, provides gourmet fare for a variety of parties and events.

A big thank you to all the event sponsors that helped maximize the funds going to The Bridge for all of its good work. These sponsors included: Coppa Bella Motors, Hagerty, McCall Events, Porsche Monterey, Redwood Media Group, Risk Strategies, and us here at Monterey Motorsport Park.

The next event on the calendar for auto aficionados will be Monterey Motorsport Park’s Open House sneak preview on Tuesday, August 13th during Monterey Car Week. Once again, the invitation-only get-together will be catered by Bridge Culinary, and this time will benefit SNIP Monterey County, a nonprofit organization that operates a mobile, low-cost spay and neuter clinic serving Monterey County and surrounding areas.

Monterey Motorsport Park Announces Exciting Partnership with SVRA

1000 400 Monterey Motorsport Park

Sportscar Vintage Racing Association is the largest platform for vintage racing in the U.S.

Visit the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) homepage, and you’ll quickly understand the mindset of one of the oldest and most respected organizations in vintage racing

Some people collect art…We race it.

That pretty much sums up the group’s philosophy. Whether it’s a Formula 1 or Indy car, or a classic Jaguar or Porsche, SVRA sanctions events at racetracks across the country that bring together motorsports enthusiasts who collect, maintain and race these classic cars that represent a rolling history of motorsports the world around.

In doing so, the SVRA has grown steadily to 2,500 active members with a database of more than 11,000 racecars. The group will put on 14 events at well-known and revered tracks across the country, from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

So, it’s with great pleasure that Monterey Motorsport Park announces that we have signed an agreement to partner with SVRA and help support all that the SVRA does for the vintage racing community in the U.S.

“Monterey Motorsport Park and SVRA share a tremendous passion for historic and collector cars and the people who own them,” said Ralph Borelli, chairman of Borelli Investment Company and a co-founder of Monterey Motorsport Park. “We’re excited to share information about these luxury garage-condos and how we cater to the needs of discerning automobile enthusiasts with the broad audience delivered via SRVA’s events and activities nationwide.”

“Where could you find a better cultural fit for an SVRA partner than Monterey Motorsports Park?” added SVRA CEO Tony Parella. “We are honored to have this relationship and it is very appropriate in a year where we are excited to have WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca on our calendar.”

Monterey Motorsport Park joins a long list of SVRA sponsors including Jaguar, Land Rover, Merrill Lynch, NetJets, Sunoco, Mazda, and more.

Ideal for Storing Vintage Race Cars or Collector Cars

Located along Highway 68 near the Monterey airport and just minutes from WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, Monterey Motorsport Park is ideal for securely storing any type of car collection — for vintage racing, track driving or entering in shows or Concours competitions.

The 86 upscale garage-condos range in size from just less than 700 sq. ft. to around 2,600 sq. ft., with the gated, access-controlled complex protected by video and pro-active remote guarding services from Elite Interactive Solutions. Each luxury unit features:

  • Large roll-up doors for easily moving vehicles in and out of your unit
  • A separate walk-in door for owners and their guests
  • Soaring ceilings to as much as 25 feet
  • A mezzanine 13 feet above the garage floor, accessible via an interior staircase, which can be customized into a splendid retreat with wet bar, large-screen TV and more, or a personal office
  • High-speed fiber optic Internet and cable TV access

The best part is: these are garage-condos that you can invest in — rather than rent — meaning that just like the classic pieces of rolling art that owners are storing in their garage-condos, there’s the potential of enjoying the appreciation of precious real estate on the beautiful Monterey Peninsula over the years.

Construction Moving Quickly as Summer Arrives in Monterey

1024 462 Monterey Motorsport Park

Monterey Motorsport Park is rapidly taking shape as summer weather arrives on the Monterey Peninsula. The four-building garage-condo complex adjacent to Monterey Regional Airport remains on track for completion in the final quarter of 2019, when owners of the luxury spaces will be able to customize their units and move their car collections, personal or business storage — and settle into the luxury retreats and/or offices they create in their spaces.

Here are just a few of the construction tasks that have been completed in recent weeks by co-developer and contractor Swenson:

Building A

  • The steel framing is complete and metal panels have been secured to one side of the framing
  • Mechanical, electrical and plumbing has been 100% roughed in
  • Windows and fans are in place and lath has been secured to the plywood in preparation for applying the stucco
  • The roof is now in place

Building B

  • Steel framing is 70% complete
  • 50% of the demising walls have steel plates secured to one side of the walls

Building C

  • Steel framing is complete and the steel plates have been added to one side of the demising walls
  • The windows are in place
  • Approximately 25% of the electrical has been roughed in

Building D

  • Underground work has been completed, and the lower slab and retaining wall have been poured

Additionally, most of the site work at Monterey Motorsport Park has been completed including: the south and west concrete masonry retaining walls, the north wall’s I-beams have been set in concrete — with wood lagging underway, base rock has been laid for most roads, all underground work (sanitary sewer, fire water, drain, water, and electricity) — except for the east road — has been finished, and the storm chamber water retention system has been installed.

You can view the construction progress first-hand by following our live construction cam or watching our most recent construction videos.

Sales Pace Is Picking Up

While construction has been progressing rapidly, the sales pace has picked up as well. If you’ve been waiting to time your purchase at Monterey Motorsport Park, now’s the time to take a close look and settle on your favorite space. The selection is dwindling quickly:

  • Building A — Offering the largest garage-condos for sizable collections or other demanding requirements, Building A only has two spaces remaining that aren’t either pending or in escrow.
  • Building B — Half of the 22 units are gone.
  • Building C — More than half of the garage-condos are in escrow.
  • Building D — Even the building with the largest number of units — including many of the most compact and affordably priced garage-condos — already has 50% of the units in escrow.

With the beautiful weather finally here and Monterey Car Week fast approaching in August, now is the time when momentum is expected to pick up dramatically.
